Print Control Helps You Save Money, Go Green, and Recruit Millennials

I know. Sometimes the constant attention paid to Millennials is annoying. Print control helps your business go green - and saves you money.

However, annoying or not, you're going to be working with them (and you probably are already).

By 2020, they will be 50% of the U.S. workforce (Bureau of Labor Statistics).

To attract and retain the best and the brightest employees, understanding what makes this generation of workers tick is a good idea.

How you use your copiers and view printing can help you recruit Millennials to your business. That's right, controlling print output by using print rules (among other efforts) can make you a more attractive employer.

Strange, I know. Bear with me though because it's not even a stretch to make this argument (and best of all, controlling print costs is just a good idea period).

Two Things Millennials Want

The literature on this generation is extensive.

Yes, there are some . . . less-than-admirable qualities common to some Millennials – an expectation of rapid advancement and lack of respect for grinding daily to build expertise are two that really annoy many people.

However, they do have admirable qualities too, including a willingness to work hard. There are two qualities of Millennials that I want to focus on here – and I'll tie those into how controlling your printing costs works to both attract Millennials while being excellent for your company's bottom line.

The two qualities are:

  1. a commitment to the environment/sustainability – “Going Green
  2. wanting to make a difference

It's hard to argue with either of those ideals – though the grumpier side of me sometimes wants to and say “just get to work!”

They want to work for a company having a positive impact on the world. That sounds daunting and we can't all be in the business of saving baby seals, but every business can take concrete steps to rein in the amount of paper wasted. And that does contribute to a healthier environment over time (less paper waste means less need for waste disposal/recycling means less energy/gas used equals few carbon emissions).

How Your Copier Can Attract Millennials to Work For You

Tools like UniFlow allow you to track – and restrict – printing throughout your business.
Using print rules you can:

  • Enforce double-sided printing
  • Create pop ups to say some variation of “Are you sure you want to print that?”

You can download a free copy of 14 print rules if you want more examples.

Recycling toner cartridges is also an easy thing to do. In fact, we make it easy to recycle toner cartridges (you don't even need to be a customer). Read about the reasons to recycle here, Don't Throw That Away! How and Why to Recycle Toner Cartridges.

Millennials are also used to working digitally. Copiers and workflow can help you remove paper from your business processes. Read SMBs and Document Management: It's Time to Digitize to see why you need to transition to a digital business.

Even Better – UniFlow Saves You Money

Even if Millennials didn't exist, greening your company and making it a place where employees feel like they make a difference are both good ideas.

More to the point – and the bottom line – using tools like UniFlow with your copiers makes your company more productive while saving money.

We put together an infographic that shows how much out-of-control printing costs business.

*FYI, there's no set definition of the years that define the Millennial generation. The only generation the U.S. Census Bureau has identified is the Baby Boomers (1946 – 1964). Depending on the research you like best, it's the generation born 1982 to 2004 (give or take a few years in either direction).
